Over 1k new housing units to be created in Winnipeg through 11 projects

The City of Winnipeg and Government of Canada announced 11 new housing development projects will be taking place in the city.

The projects will be funded by the Housing Accelerator Fund Capital Grant Program, which has allocated $25 million for the projects.

“Through the Housing Accelerator Fund, we’re working with cities like Winnipeg to tackle housing shortages and get more shovels in the ground,” said The Honourable Dan Vandal, Minister responsible for PrairiesCan.

“These 11 projects will provide more Winnipeggers with safe, affordable homes and contribute to the economic vitality of downtown Winnipeg.”

It is believed the projects will lead to the creation of 1,135 new housing units in the city. Of those, 597 will be affordable housing, and 613 will be in downtown.

“These grants are a critical investment in our city’s housing market,” added Mayor Scott Gillingham.

“By focusing on affordable and downtown housing, we’re addressing urgent needs and helping create a more inclusive, vibrant Winnipeg. I’m proud of the role this program will play in ensuring more residents have access to safe, affordable homes.”

The new projects will add on to the 2023 announcement by the feds and City, where $122.4 million was provided under the CMHC’s Housing Accelerator Fund, to create 3,166 housing units by 2027.

More information on the housing projects and the grants can be found on the city’s website.
