Winnipeg man charged for having gun after nearly hitting police cruiser on bicycle

Winnipeg police have charged a 23-year-old man for having an improvised gun and outstanding warrant Sunday morning after he nearly hit a police cruiser.

WPS says at around 1:42 a.m., patrol officers noticed a man riding a bicycle in an unsafe manner near Alexander Avenue and Arlington Street.

It is believed the rider nearly hit the police cruiser, at which point the officers conducted a traffic stop.

When speaking to the cyclist, he identified himself as a man who had an active warrant in effect.

While searching the man, officers found a loaded improvised firearm — a Zip gun — with a .22 calibre round of ammunition.

Following this, the man provided police with his actual name, and through an investigation, it was learned that he is wanted in connection to a warrant in Brandon.

Since, police have charged the 23-year-old with possession of a weapon, carrying a concealed weapon, identity fraud, failing to attend court, and Provincial Offence Act Notice (HTA 75).
