Man in hospital after being shot by RCMP southwest of Winnipeg

Manitoba’s police watchdog — the Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) — is investigating an officer-involved shooting that took place in the RM of Macdonald — just southwest of Winnipeg — Wednesday evening.

RCMP says officers responded to a report of an assault and disturbance at a home in the regional municipality around 9:10 p.m.

Reports indicated that a 23-year-old man had assaulted a woman in the home and attempted to light vehicles on fire.

When Mounties arrived at the scene, they were confronted by the man, who was reportedly armed with an edged weapon.

During the confrontation, one officer fired their service weapon and hit the 23-year-old. He was then taken into custody and provided medical care by officers until paramedics arrived and could be taken to a hospital.

RCMP has reported the shooting to the IIU and they have taken over the investigation.
