Man killed former partner’s family in McCreary before turning gun on himself: RCMP

Manitoba RCMP say the triple homicide near McCreary, Man., last week involved a 41-year-old man killing three of his former partner’s family members — her parents and brother — before turning the gun on himself.

They are describing the “troubling and traumatic” murders as an “absolute horrific act of intimate partner violence.”

Police say Marlon Glover “forcibly entered” the home of his 37-year-old former partner around 1:20 a.m. on Aug. 16. Authorities say the woman escaped the home and hid in a nearby wooded area.

RCMP allege Glover then drove to a nearby home belonging to the woman’s relatives. They say he fatally shot her 35-year-old brother, 65-year-old father and 66-year-old mother.

Police say Glover then left the home in his vehicle, stopped on the side of the road 84 West, and turned the gun on himself.

Mounties say the woman, who has asked police not identify her, spent more than 11 hours hiding in the wooded area near her home before officers found her around 12:40 p.m. She was taken to hospital as a precaution.

“I can only imagine it must have been terrifying for her after the ordeal that she had endured, prior to escaping and and hiding. I can expect that she was terrified at that time,” RCMP Staff Sgt. Richard Sherring said at a press conference in Winnipeg.

“There are many people who are grieving and lost a loved one, and today, I express my condolences to them. The survivor and family is going through an unimaginable loss and has asked everybody to respect their privacy.”

Protection order against Glover

RCMP say they served Glover with a protection order — sometimes called a restraining order — on behalf of the former partner on Nov. 24, 2023. Police say they seized two firearms, ammunition and his firearms licence in the process.

“These items were not returned prior to the homicides and remain in the RCMP custody,” Sherring said.

Police are still investigating what weapon was used in the triple homicide. They are in possession of it and are processing it.

“Unfortunately, we were unaware of any additional firearms,” Sherring explained. “We were made aware of the two which were seized at that time. We don’t have any control over over that.”

Sherring says between November 2023 and last week’s fatal shooting, there were “additional calls for service” made to police in relation to the protection order. Police would not give details about the severity of the calls, or if the accused got closer than 100 metres.

“Police did respond and dealt with those calls for service appropriately, without getting into the detail of what those calls actually were, which I’m not prepared to do here today. That’s all I can say,” the RCMP Staff Sgt. said.

RCMP in Sainte Rose du Lac say say they were first called about Glover’s body on the road around 10:10 a.m. About 30 minutes later, officers received a call for a well-being check for the 37-year-old woman; they went to her home but she was not there.

A search for her led police to the discovery of the three bodies of her family members.

McCreary is a town of fewer than 1,000 people roughly 240 kilometres northwest of Winnipeg.
