Some of the 130 dogs seized from home north of Winnipeg now up for adoption

A first group of dogs from the more than 130 living in unsanitary conditions seized from a home north of Winnipeg earlier this month are now up for adoption.

The Winnipeg Humane Society (WHS) says the dogs that are “healthy and old enough” are the ones now looking for their forever homes.

Animal welfare officials executed a search warrant at a property on Aug. 1 and found many small-breed dogs in distress and in need of medical attention.

The WHS provided shelter and care for many of the dogs.

Anyone wanting to meet the dogs up for adoption is asked to visit the WHS location on Hurst Way. They say adoptions are on a first-come, first-serve basis.

The next step for many of the dogs that were seized will be getting spayed and neutered, the WHS adds.

“Some of the dogs will also be making their way into partner rescue organizations,” the humane society said in a news release. “Having rescues take over the care of some of the dogs reduces the strain on WHS resources, including spay/neuter and medical care, and taps into different audiences of potential adopters, all of which results in getting dogs in homes faster.”
