Newcomer to Winnipeg assaulted with ‘small metal weapon’ after getting off city bus: police

By News Staff

Winnipeg police say a 21-year-old newcomer to Winnipeg was allegedly attacked during a robbery attempt shortly after she got off a public bus on Sunday morning.

The Winnipeg Police Service says the victim sustained a minor upper-body injury during the alleged assault near Sanford Street and Sargent Avenue around 9:15 a.m.

Members of the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service provided medical care, police say.

Investigators say the victim walked off a Winnipeg Transit bus on Empress Street when she was allegedly grabbed from behind by a woman “who was trying to take her cell phone.”

“When the female victim pulled back, she was assaulted by the female suspect with a small metal weapon,” WPS said in a news release.

Police don’t believe the victim and suspect knew each other.

Winnipeg police say several passersby pointed officers in the direction of the suspect, who was then arrested.

A 22-year-old Winnipeg woman was charged with robbery and failing to comply with a probation order. She was detained in custody.

Earlier this month, police say two newcomers to Winnipeg – a mother and her teenage son – were allegedly assaulted with a baseball bat after refusing to give two suspects money.
