A minor sustained “life-altering” injuries after allegedly being attacked with a machete during a fight in Winnipeg’s North End on Saturday night, police say.
The Winnipeg Police Service says the boy, whose age is not known, was taken to hospital in critical condition and later upgraded to stable.
Officers were called to Selkirk Avenue near Aikins Street around 11 p.m. for the report of a stabbing; they found the youth with “extensive, serious injuries.”
Police allege a teenage suspect was located a couple of blocks away, on Flora Avenue, “a short time later.”
Investigators believe the two minors, who did not know each other, got into an argument.
“The situation escalated, and the male victim was knocked to the ground and assaulted by being kicked, punched and struck with the machete,” Winnipeg police said in a news release.
A 15-year-old Winnipeg teen has been charged with aggravated assault, robbery, possession of a weapon and four counts of failing to comply with a probation order. He was detained in custody.
The WPS major crimes unit is investigating.
