Woman killed in collision shortly after RCMP attempt traffic stop: Winnipeg police

Winnipeg police say a 26-year-old woman has been killed following a multi-vehicle collision involving a semi-truck Wednesday afternoon.

WPS says around 4:46 p.m. on July 31, officers responded to reports of a serious collision at CentrePort Canada Way and the Perimeter Highway.

By the time WPS arrived, RCMP were already on scene.

It is believed that leading up to the collision, an RCMP officer had attempted to conduct a traffic stop. Reports indicate, a short time later, the vehicle then collided with the semi.

According to Manitoba’s police watchdog — the Independent Investigation Unit (IIU) — which has begun an investigation, the RCMP say around 4:40 p.m., a Honda Civic was scene driving at 107 km/h in a 70km/h zone, which led to the officer attempting the traffic stop.

The traffic stop reportedly failed and the civic ran a red light, when it hit the semi.

As a result of the collision, a 26-year-old woman was taken to hospital, where she died from her injuries.
