Man charged with manslaughter in killing of Dauphin River First Nation woman

A 23-year-old man is facing a manslaughter charge in connection with the death of a woman from Dauphin River First Nation last month.

Winnipeg police say 29-year-old Norma Jean Sumner died in hospital of injuries sustained during a physical altercation with a suspect in the early hours of June 23.

Officers found Sumner, who police say had recently moved to Winnipeg, on Balmoral Street near Sargent Avenue.

Homicide investigators identified a suspect, and officers arrested him on Wednesday. He has been detained in custody.

Police say the victim and suspect did not know each other.
