Man pushes elderly woman in mobility walker to ground, assaults her: WPS

Winnipeg police say one man has been charged following alleged assaults on June 26 in the Exchange District.

WPS says officers responded to a report of an assault in a parking lot near Winnipeg Square just before 10:30 a.m. Officers say they were able to take a man into custody without incident after he was held by business staff.

In the days that followed, WPS received additional reports of similar alleged assaults that occurred earlier in the day on June 26.

Police say three women reported being attacked in separate incidents between 10:15 and 10:25 a.m.

Though an investigation, officers determined events happened in the following order:

• Along Bannatyne Avenue and Main Street, a man allegedly threw a metal chair at a 68-year-old woman, hitting her in the lower body, before fleeing on foot.
• Along McDermot Avenue near Princess Street, a man allegedly pushed an elderly woman who was using a mobility walker to the ground, and began physically assaulting her with a purse he was carrying. A Good Samaritan — a 38-year-old woman — intervened and stopped the incident before she was allegedly assaulted.
• Along Main Street near Winnipeg Square, a man entered a parking lot where he allegedly opened a door of a parked vehicle, and kicked a 40-year-old man.

The victims suffered minor injuries.

Police believe it was the same suspect in all incidents. On June 30, officers located the suspect near Central Park and took him into custody.

Brendan Jordan Lee White has been charged with assault and three additional counts of assault with a weapon.
