Man, 23, arrested after sexual assault of girl on North End playground in June

By News Staff

Winnipeg police have arrested a 23-year-old man who allegedly sexually assaulted an elementary school child at a North End playground last month.

Police say officers responded to the report of a “suspicious man” asking to a picture of a child at a park on King Street on Monday around 6:30 p.m.

“A concerned adult followed the male and provided a description to police. The child was not harmed,” WPS said in a news release.

The officers believed the man was related to a June 1 alleged sexual assault at a school playground on Flora Avenue near Salter Street.

In that incident, police say the suspect first made sexually explicit comments, then allegedly “grabbed one of the children and touched her in a sexual manner.”

The child broke free, according to police, and both children ran home to tell an adult, who called 911. Neither of the children required medical attention, WPS said.

Police located the suspect a home on Jarvis Avenue. He was arrested and turned over to the child abuse unit.

Albert Kema of Winnipeg was charged with sexual assault and sexual interference in connection with the June 1 incident. He was detained in custody.
