With road construction comes congestion concerns in Winnipeg

As the City of Winnipeg spends almost $140 million on improvements when it comes to local and regional streets, there’s no shortage of drivers caught in the congestion. Morgan Modjeski reports.

The City of Winnipeg has already filled more than 130,000 potholes, but for some navigating the summer construction season, it seems like the work is almost endless.

The total number of potholes to date is 138,696 and according to the City they’re filling hundreds daily, with more than 7,300 filled since the end of May.

But the pothole work is only the tip of the infrastructure iceberg, as right now crews are working to complete almost $140 million in work on local and regional streets.

For folks locked in traffic in Osborne Village Friday afternoon the resulting traffic, is a bit of a flat tire.

“Not lookin’ very good,” said one resident.

Another saying, “It’s so inconvenient trying to get anywhere in the city.”

Some in the city navigating the construction season on foot also say it feels like the construction just continues.

“I think it’s a little bit ridiculous. Every summer, it’s the same thing. construction at the same time, and it’s everywhere. You block off most of the major intersections and now you have this. It’s like rinse and repeat every year,” said one Winnipegger CityNews spoke to.

Others say the wait is worth the improvements.

“I think they’re doing a great job.”

As the construction season continues, the City says drivers are encouraged to respect all signage and take extra caution when in construction zones, Mayor Scott Gillingham previously thanking drivers for their patience.
