Winnipeg police charge man in connection to slot machine robbery with machete

Winnipeg police say a 23-year-old man has been charged following an alleged robbery at a slot machine game room earlier this month.

WPS says on May 16, officers responded to a report that a robbery had taken place at a hotel gaming room along Berry Street.

The report indicated a 59-year-old man was playing VLTs (virtual lottery terminal) when another man approached him and began a conversation.

During the conversation, a machete was pulled out and the man playing the VLT was allegedly robbed of $130, and the suspect fled on foot.

On Sunday, officers were called to the same location after receiving a report that the suspect from 10 days prior had returned.

Staff had reportedly identified the man, however by the time officers arrived, the man had already fled the scene.

Just over an hour later, officers patrolling the area spotted the man, and he was taken into custody.

During a search, officers found a machete and it was seized as evidence.

Twenty-three-year-old Norman Glen Beardy has been charged with robbery, possession of a weapon, carrying a concealed weapon, and failing to comply with a probation order.
