Sea Bears looking to bounce back in home opener

After a historical inaugural season, the Winnipeg Sea Bears are set to put on a show in their home opener. Kurt Black reports.

With eight new faces looking to make an immediate impact, the Sea Bears offense struggled to find their rhythm in their season opener.

As aside from a game-high 40 points from reigning CEBL MVP Teddy Allen, only two other Bears reached double-digits, leaving many in the Winnipeg locker room, chomping at the bit, to redeem themselves in front of the home crowd Friday night.

“My debut didn’t go how I wanted it to go, there is always room to improve, and I got to improve tonight a lot,” said Darius Days, a forward for the Winnipeg Sea Bears.

Sea Bears guard, Alex Campbell adding, “Just as a team and personally we know we can do better, just came out kind of flat, kinda battling up-hill all game so looking to get off to a much better start tonight.”

Friday’s home opener will also mark a special moment for the five Winnipeg-born Sea Bears, taking to the court in front of family and friends. Specifically for 32-year-old Jarred Ogungbemi-Jackson, who is back home after playing overseas for the past decade.

“You know people haven’t seen me play here since I was 18 and I’ve played pro for nine years, so I had like 20 messages yesterday just wishing me good luck for the home opener, so I’m looking forward to it,”said Ogungbemi-Jackson.

Last season, Canada Life Centre quickly developed the reputation as the loudest barn in the entire CEBL, a reputation, newcomers to the team are looking forward to experiencing Friday.

“I’ve heard a lot about the fans and how there is going to be around 11-12 thousand people in the arena, I’m excited for that seeing all the teal and black in the audience so I’m excited,” said Days.
