Person in hospital after being rescued from Assiniboine River

The Winnipeg Fire Rescue Services says one person is in hospital after being pulled from the Assiniboine River Sunday evening.

Around 5:26 p.m., the WFPS responded to reports of someone in the river near the Donald Street bridge.

When crews arrived, they found the individual, who was caught in a current and was being pulled toward the Red River.

The WFPS was quickly able to rescue them and bring them to shore before they were taken to a hospital in critical condition.

Rescue crews say at this time it is not known how the individual ended up in the river, or how long they were in it.

Last year, the WFPS responded to approximately 150 water rescue calls.
