Man charged following machete stabbing in Winnipeg

Winnipeg police have charged a 19-year-old man in connection to a stabbing Thursday afternoon.

WPS says they received a report around 12:10 p.m., that a man had been stabbed along Jorowski Cove.

When officers arrived, they found a 21-year-old suffering from upper body injuries.

Police provided medical care to the man, and he was taken to hospital in critical condition by paramedics. He was later upgraded to stable.

Through an investigation, police learned the suspect and victim knew each other prior to the stabbing and were with each other at a home when a verbal argument happened.

The argument reportedly escalated, at which point a machete was pulled out and the victim was hit multiple times.

Around 12:50 p.m., officers took 19-year-old Phoenix Kalen Kawakami into custody and he has since been charged with aggravated assault, possession of a weapon, failing to comply with conditions of a release order, and breach of recognizance.
