IIU investigating motorcycle collision, arrest in Winnipeg

Manitoba’s police watchdog is looking into events surrounding a motorcycle accident and arrest in Winnipeg on Sunday.

The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) says around 12:16 p.m. on April 7, officers noticed a man on a motorcycle exit the rear lane of Hallet Street onto Rover Avenue. When police checked the vehicle’s license plate, they reportedly found it to be expired and registered to a different motorcycle.

Officers say they then attempted a traffic stop, but the motorcycle fled at a high speed.

Several police units saw the motorcycle in the North End and Garden City area, where it attempted to pass another vehicle that was making a left turn from Templeton Avenue onto Meredith Bay.

During the pass attempt, the motorcycle apparently hit the driver’s side door, and the biker landed in the front yard of a nearby residence.

Officers say they arrived at the scene following the collision and took the man into custody as he tried to flee.

After the suspect was placed in custody, police say they learned he had an outstanding warrant for his arrest.

Paramedics treated the man at the scene and took him to the Health Sciences Centre for treatment, where it was reported he had suffered a number of bruises, lacerations and a fractured right leg.

Due to the extent of his injuries, Winnipeg police informed the IIU of the incident and it’s now investigating.
