Province’s best 5-pin bowlers converge on Winnipeg

Some of the best five-pin bowlers in the province rolled into Manitoba this week for their chance to compete on the national stage of five-pin bowling.

Taking place Friday and Saturday at St. James Lanes, the event will see 44 bowlers vying for a spot on a team headed to Ottawa for Nationals in May.

With Manitoba sending both a men’s and ladies’ team, a mixed team, alongside two single bowlers, the regional event is a chance to gauge and showcase Manitoba talent, while also keeping the sport strong, and encouraging its growth, in the province.

Detailing how the teams headed to Ottawa later this year will be decided, Karen Armstrong, assistant tournament director and President of Winnipeg 5-Pin Bowling says the event is a chance to showcase Manitoba talent, but also keep the sport strong in the province. “Unfortunately, you’re seeing bowling as a decline right now in the numbers, and we’re really trying to push our sport forward and to keep it going, and if we lose this tournament, then it’s just going to do more of a decline, so we want to keep this tournament going and for all the young players out there, this is your next step,” said Karen Armstrong, Assistant Tournament Director and President of Winnipeg 5-Pin Bowling.
