Parents charged after infant girl dies from exposure to fentanyl, meth: Winnipeg police

By News Staff

Winnipeg police say a three-month-old girl died from exposure to fentanyl and methamphetamine two years ago, and her parents are facing charges.

The Winnipeg Police Service says autopsy and toxicology reports determined Layla Mattern Muise’s cause of death.

On Feb. 2, 2022, police and paramedics went to a home on Westgrove Way for an unresponsive infant. She was taken to hospital and died “days later.”

The WPS’ child abuse unit began a “lengthy investigation” into the death.

On Tuesday – more than two years later – Christopher Joseph Mattern, 39, and Alison Kimberly Muise, 40, were arrested and charged with failure to provide the necessaries of life. They were detained in custody.
