Winnipeg firefighters battle blazes at store, hotel on Main Street

By News Staff

A commercial building on Main Street and Mountain Avenue was damaged by fire overnight.

WFPS crews were called to the Best Way Food Market just before midnight.

Firefighters arrived to find heavy smoke and flames coming from the building, and it was not safe for them to enter. The fire was under control at 1:30 a.m.

The building sustained water, smoke, and fire damage.

Occupants managed to leave the building before crews made it on scene.

The roads and sidewalks around the building were slippery after water used to fight the fire froze. City crews were tasked with sanding the slippery areas.

The fire remains under investigation.

Hotel fire: person in unstable condition

It was the second blaze on Main Steet Saturday night. Shortly after 7 p.m., firefighters were called to a hotel on Main near Sutherland Avenue.

Crews arrived to find the building’s sprinkler system had knocked down most of the flames. The fire was declared under control by 7:30 p.m.

Occupants managed to leave the building before crews made it on scene, but one person was taken to hospital by paramedics in unstable condition.

Most of the damage was contained to the suite where the fire started, WFPS said.

The fire remains under investigation.
