A text alert on your phone is usually welcome, but in some cases, it’s a scammer on the other end, with one scam “from the future” making the rounds in Winnipeg.
“Speeding ticket from the future, I hope it’s the in the DeLorean,” said Michael Cochrane.
Cochrane received the scam text Thursday. It claimed radar caught him going 27 km over the limit — but the date was March 18 — which is still days away.
“It definitely made me look at the Calendar and go: ‘What day is this?'” he explained.
Cochrane didn’t click the link and calls to the number went unanswered.
Cochrane isn’t alone when it comes to the speed cam scam. Winnipeg Police aired a Facebook live PSA “Police Service Announcement” on Thursday afternoon highlighting information regarding the scam, after they received an influx of reports from concerned citizens overnight.

March is fraud awareness month and this scam made it all the way to City Hall.
Mayor Scott Gillingham warned the public. Saying: “The City of Winnipeg doesn’t send speeding violations via text, and we don’t engage in time travel either. If you receive a text like this, hit delete instead of the link.”
As for Cochrane he hopes people don’t get caught up in the strangely-dated scam.
“You hate to hear it.”
