Winnipeg urging caution during extreme cold as plows look to clear snow

The City of Winnipeg says snow plowing is in effect around the city, following the latest snowfall.

Crews will be working in a priority system, clearing main roads, sidewalks, and pathways.

Due to this, the annual winter route parking ban is in effect around the city. During the parking ban, drivers will not be allowed to park on streets marked with winter route signs between 2 a.m. and 7 a.m.

The City is also urging residents to take extra caution due to extreme cold temperatures that are expected over the week.

City facilities will be open during periods of cold weather.

Winnipeg has also provided the following safety tips:

  • Older adults and very young children should avoid prolonged outdoor exposure.
  • Check on older friends, relatives, and neighbours who live alone.
  • Recognize the symptoms of hypothermia: confusion, shivering, difficulty speaking, sleepiness, stiff muscles. If these symptoms are present, seek immediate medical attention. Severe hypothermia can be life threatening.
  • Bring pets inside and limit the amount of time they spend outside.

In addition, if anyone sees someone who may need help or is injured due to the extreme cold, call 911.
