RCMP dealing with ‘alarming’ cyber attack on its networks

By Michael Talbot

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) confirms it is dealing with a cyber attack on its networks, although it maintains it is not currently considered a security threat.

“The situation is evolving quickly but, at this time there is no impact on RCMP operations and no known threat to the safety and security of Canadians,” the RCMP said in a statement to CityNews.

“At this time, there are no known impacts on safety and security partners in Canada or abroad.”

The RCMP’s website appears fully functional.

The motivations behind the attack aren’t clear at this point. A criminal investigation is underway.

While the RCMP called the breach “alarming,” it adds that “the quick work and mitigation strategies put in place demonstrates the significant steps the RCMP has taken to detect and prevent these types of threats.”

Despite those assurances, the RCMP admits that the full breadth and scope of the breach is still unclear, and they don’t know who is responsible at this point.
