Man with axe stabs taxi driver near Garden City shopping mall: WPS

By News Staff

Winnipeg police say a man with an axe attacked a taxi driver near the Garden City shopping mall before stealing the cab Friday evening.

Police say the man stabbed the driver and pulled him from the vehicle before fleeing in the taxi around 6 p.m.

WPS Chief Danny Smyth says nearby police units stopped the stolen cab, at which point the man attempted to flee. He was arrested by police “a short distance away,” Smyth said.

Smyth says the man complained of an injury to his ankle once he was taken into custody.

“He was transported to hospital and it was confirmed that he had sustained a fracture,” said the police chief.

Because of the injury, Manitoba’s police watchdog (IIU) was tasked with investigating.

Police did not provide an update on the taxi driver’s status.
