Homicide police investigating North End death of 20-year-old man

By News Staff

Winnipeg police are investigating the death of a 20-year-old man in North End-Lord Selkirk Park Saturday afternoon.

The Winnipeg Police Service says it was called to Flora Avenue near King Street around 3 p.m. for the report of “suspicious circumstances.”

Responding officers arrived to find a man’s body outside a church, police say. Investigators have identified the victim as Brooklyn Elijah Hiebert of Winnipeg.

In a press conference Monday afternoon, WPS Const. Dani McKinnon said Hiebert was known to police and may have been affiliated with gangs and struggled with drug addition.

McKinnon says the victim did not have a permanent address and “moved around,” and was known to frequent some of the community’s shelters and social services.

“He was certainly known to frequent that area,” McKinnon said.

Homicide police are investigating. It would be the 42nd homicide of 2023 — the 14th since Nov. 1.

Police are asking the public for any information about recent interactions with Hiebert or video surveillance from the area “from the last week or so.”
