IIU investigating Winnipeg police arrest that sent man to hospital

Manitoba’s police watchdog says it’s investigating a recent arrest conducted by Winnipeg police after a man ended up in hospital.

Winnipeg police say around 3:05 p.m. on Thursday, officers responded to a residence along Ross Avenue West regarding “suspicious circumstances.”

Responding officers learned before their arrival that an occupant in the residence was wanted on three outstanding warrants.

Police also learned that the suspect associated with the suspicious call for service was in the area of Keewatin Street and Pacific Avenue.

When officers arrived at the scene, they found the man and attempted to take him into custody, however, he attempted to flee on foot.

Police say after a short pursuit they were able to apprehend him, at which point, the man began resisting arrest.

During the attempted arrest, one officer used a taser on the man in an effort to gain control.

WPS noted that while this was happening, a woman who was with the man attempted to interfere with the officers. She was taken into custody and charged with obstructing a peace officer.

The man was also taken into custody for three outstanding warrants, resisting peace officers, and obstructing peace officers.

WPS says after he was taken into custody, he was taken to a hospital for injuries.

The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) has been notified.
