Conservation officers charge Manitoban for killing bald eagle

Manitoba conservation officers have laid charges in connection to the shooting of a bald eagle.

According to the Manitoba Economic Development, Investment, Trade and Natural Resources, a tip was received on Dec. 8 from a member of the public reporting a bald eagle had been shot near Grunthal, Manitoba — roughly 50 km south of Winnipeg.

A conservation officer and volunteers from Wildlife Haven Rehabilitation Centre responded to the scene and located the injured eagle suffering from a broken leg and a bullet in its chest.

From there, the eagle was moved to the animal rescue centre, where it died from its injuries.

Through an investigation, conservation officers were able to locate and interview an individual from the Rural Municipality of Hanover.

Since they have been charged for hunting on private land without permission and for killing or attempting to kill a protected species.

They are facing fines of $1,158 and their high-calibre rifle was also seized.
