North End duplex destroyed after early-morning fire

By News Staff

One person was taken to hospital after a fire destroyed a North End duplex early Sunday morning.

The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service says crews were called to the two-storey home on Manitoba Avenue near Andrews Street around 12:30 a.m.

Crews arrived to find heavy smoke coming from the duplex.

Firefighters helped one occupant leave the building. They were assessed on scene by paramedics and transported to hospital in stable condition.

Other occupants had managed to safely leave the home on their own, WFPS says. No other injuries were reported.

Two neighbouring homes were evacuated as a precaution. Winnipeg’s Emergency Social Services (ESS) team assisted the displaced residents in finding temporary accommodation.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. The building was significantly damaged and is considered a complete loss.
