‘Suspicious item’ detonated by police in West End contained no explosive materials: WPS

By News Staff

Residents of West End were evacuated from their homes to allow Winnipeg police to detonate a “suspicious item” found in a compost bin Sunday morning.

The Winnipeg Police Service says it was called to the back lane of a complex on Agnes Street near Ellice Avenue around 8:40 a.m.

Officers say they treated the item as a possible improvised explosive device (IED) and the WPS bomb unit was called in.

The area was contained, and residents of the complex and nearby residences were evacuated.

The WPS bomb unit then “executed a controlled detonation.”

“The item was found not to contain any explosive materials,” Winnipeg police said in a news release.

Residents were later allowed to return home. There were no injuries.

The WPS major crimes unit is investigating.
