Malfunctioning furnace likely cause of Toronto Street bungalow fire: WFPS

By The Canadian Press and News Staff

Winnipeg firefighters say a malfunctioning furnace is likely to blame for a fire that severely damaged a house on Toronto Street Saturday morning.

Crews were alerted to the blaze by a monitored fire alarm.

They say they deployed an aerosol mist device at first but had to retreat and attack the fire from outside due to the spread of the flames.

They declared the fire under control after about two hours.

Nobody was in the house at the time and no injuries were reported.

Two neighbouring homes were evacuated as a precaution. They returned after the blaze was extinguished.

The city is advising residents to prevent fires caused by heating sources by keeping anything that can burn at least one metre away from furnaces, fireplaces, wood stoves, or portable space heaters.
