Winnipeg police increasing security, patrols due to Israel-Gaza conflict

Winnipeg police says it is monitoring and will continue to monitor certain community groups within the city regarding the war in the Middle East.

WPS said in a release Thursday, that officers have been in contact with community leaders about the impacts of the conflict and the fear and insecurity it is creating in Winnipeg.

Due to this, police will assess the events taking place in Winnipeg and the world to determine the safety and security of the community.

“In response to the terror attack in Israel last weekend, the Service immediately increased patrols around cultural centres, schools, synagogues, mosques and other places of worship across the city. People can expect to see a continued, increased police presence in affected communities,” read part of the WPS release.

“Nothing can justify the slaughter of innocent people going about their lives. We are disgusted that anyone would celebrate these attacks, or in any way associate these acts as support for the Palestinian people,” said Chief Danny Smyth, on Wednesday on behalf of the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police.

Winnipeg police added service will continue to deploy officers at rallies and protest to provide a safe and secure environment for everyone in Winnipeg.
