Premier-Designate Kinew meets with Winnipeg Mayor to discuss Winnipeg priorities for first time

By CityNews Staff

Premier-Designate Wab Kinew and Winnipeg Mayor Scott Gillingham met at City Hall this afternoon, to begin their partnership in working together for the city and also to discuss their priorities in Manitoba.

Both Kinew and Gillingham agreed their top priority is tackling housing and addiction, in an effort to support those struggling with mental health and reduce the number of people living on the streets.

Gillingham also addressed the crowd, saying the success of the new Premier-Designate is also the City’s success, and he’s looking forward to working with Kinew.

Kinew also promised to prioritize not only the city of Winnipeg, but rural municipalities in the coming budget. He says it’s important municipal and provincial governments work together to address issues affecting all Manitobans.

“I think everyone in Manitoba recognizes that we can do better than we’re seeing right now. We drive by bus shelters, we drive by people living in tents and I think nobody in Manitoba wants to see that, nobody in Winnipeg wants to see that. We want to see dignity.”
