Manitoba recommends vaccines ahead of cold and flu season

By CityNews Staff

The province provided an update Tuesday about respiratory viruses expected to circulate in Manitoba over the coming months, and plans for COVID-19 and seasonal flu vaccinations.

Public health officials are recommending all previously immunized people aged six months and older receive an updated COVID-19 vaccine this fall. The vaccine should be given six months after a person’s last dose or infection.

Updated vaccines will be available this fall and have been formulated to protect against XBB.1.5, which is an offshoot of the Omicron variant.

Public Health also recommends all eligible people receive a seasonal flu vaccine.

Vaccination against COVID-19 and seasonal flu is important for people at higher risk of severe outcomes, including adults 65 years and older, residents of long-term care homes, and anyone with underlying medical conditions.

The province expects the general public may begin to access these vaccines by early to mid-October.
