Street race ends in multi vehicle collision, 2 charged

Winnipeg police say multiple drivers have been charged following a serious collision Sunday night.

WPS says around 8:10 p.m., officers responded to a report of a multi-vehicle collision near Portage Avenue and Sturgeon Road.

When officers arrived at the scene, they immediately called for assistance from the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service due to noticeable injuries.

Two people from one vehicle were taken to hospital in critical and unstable condition. The driver of the other vehicle was also taken to hospital for precautionary reasons. Police say all three have since been upgraded to stable.

Through the initial stages of the investigation, police were able to determine a white Honda Civic and a black Volkswagon GTI had been racing prior to the collision. As they were approaching Sturgeon Road, an eastbound blue Honda Civic was turning northbound onto Sturgeon Road when it was struck by the white Honda Civic.

The drivers of the white Honda Civic and the Volkswagon GTI have since been charged with racing and careless driving. Both vehicles have been seized and impounded, police add.

Anyone who may have any information regarding the collision is asked to contact WPS at 204-986-7085 or Crime Stoppers at 204-786-8477.
