Winnipeg man broke into water treatment plant, damaged building with excavator: RCMP

By News Staff

Manitoba RCMP say a Winnipeg man broke into a water treatment plant east of the city before damaging vehicles and buildings with an excavator Sunday morning.

Mounties from Oakbank, Red River North and Selkirk say they responded to a break and enter at the Winnipeg Water Treatment Plant on Provincial Road 207 in the RM of Springfield around 2:50 a.m.

Officers were allegedly told a man entered the yard, climbed into an excavator and began to damage vehicles and buildings.

RCMP say officers arrived to find the excavator causing damage to a building, as well as numerous damaged vehicles in the parking lot.

“Officers approached the excavator and climbed aboard, ordering the operator to stop the machine. He refused and a demand was made a second time, with which he complied,” Oakbank RCMP alleged in a news release.

The suspect allegedly resisted arrest and assaulted the officers while being taken into custody.

Neither the officers nor the suspect were injured, according to police.

Aaron Michael Yarema, 39, is facing multiple charges including theft of a motor vehicle, breaking and entering, resisting arrest and failure to comply with a release order.

Oakbank RCMP are investigating.
