Manitoba police watchdog investigating a pair of arrests made in Winnipeg over Labour Day weekend

Manitoba’s police watchdog has opened a pair of investigations into recent arrests made by Winnipeg police officers.

Man dead following arrest

The first case being looked at by the Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) happened just before noon on Saturday, Sept. 2.

Winnipeg police responded to a call for service near Main Street and Alexander Avenue after receiving a report of a man who had walked into traffic.

When officers arrived, they took the man into custody before requesting an ambulance, believing the man was suffering from a medical emergency.

The IIU says while the man was in the ambulance, his condition worsened, and he arrived at the Health Sciences Centre in critical condition.

WPS reported to the IIU that the man had died while in the hospital on Sept. 4.

Woman injured during arrest

The second incident occurred around 11:13 p.m., on Sept. 3, when Winnipeg police took a woman into custody.

On Sunday, WPS responded to a report that a woman had broken into a home and was assaulting people inside.

Once officers arrived at the scene, they were able to find the woman.

According to a WPS report submitted to the IIU, during the arrest, use of force by one of the officers led to a serious injury.

The woman was taken to the Concordia Hospital, where it was learned she suffered a fractured tibia.

Due to the injury sustained during the arrest, the IIU was notified and has begun an investigation.

Anyone with any information on either incident is asked to contact the IIU at 1-844-667-6060.
