So … what happened to that recession?

By Analysis by The Big Story Podcast

In today’s Big Story Podcast, for a year now, various economists have predicted a looming Canadian recession. With more economic data due on Friday that’s expected to show some positive signs, it doesn’t look like it. And that’s a good thing, right?

David Macdonald is a senior economist for the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives’ National Office. He says that even encouraging economic data can lead to negative consequences for certain segments of the economy.

“Good news becomes bad news depending on how the bank of Canada reacts to it,” says Macdonald.

So how have we managed to avoid a recession, at least thus far? If inflation keeps falling, will the Bank of Canada stop raising interest rates? And what can you expect from Canada’s rollercoaster of an economy this fall and beyond?
