Chainsaw attack in southern Manitoba community: RCMP

Manitoba RCMP say a 73-year-old man is facing several charges following a break-in and assault on Monday.

Mounties responded to a home in Somerset, Man., after receiving a call of a break-in around 1:35 p.m.

Officers were told a man had broken into the home, before using bear spray and a chainsaw to assault another man.

When officers arrived, they found a 36-year-old man suffering from injuries. He was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Mounties noted the suspect fled the scene before they arrived, but were able to locate him a short time later.

He was taken into custody without incident. RCMP say at the time of the arrest, officers seized a small electric chainsaw.

The suspect was charged with aggravated assault, breaking and entering, and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.

An investigation is ongoing.
