Manitoba’s police watchdog investigating in-custody death

Manitoba’s police watchdog is investigating an in-custody death following an arrest made by the Winnipeg Police Service (WPS) on Monday.

The Independent Investigation Unit (IIU) says they were alerted to the death after Winnipeg police reported the incident, which occurred around 1 p.m.

In the report, WPS says officers responded to the intersection of Kinbrace Bay and McLeod Avenue after receiving reports of a man with a weapon behaving erratically.

Police say the man fled into a home, where officers were then able to take him into custody.

WPS reportedly called for medical assistance as officers became concerned for the health and well-being of the man.

The report issued to the IIU said while officers were waiting for Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Services to arrive, the man became unresponsive. He was later taken to the Health Sciences Centre in critical condition, where he was later pronounced dead.

The IIU has since taken over the investigation.
