7 cyclists injured during World Police Fire Games

Seven cycling competitors from the World Police Fire Games were injured Wednesday morning after a crash during a road race at Birds Hill Park.

Shared health confirmed seven patients were taken to hospital, and a number of other patients were treated on scene.

Mike Edwards, the COO of the games say the athletes are recovering.

Shared Health confirming that the crash triggered a brief code orange which is the alert for a multiple casualty event at HSC, but was declared over after 45 minutes.

Edwards says the riders, which included men 55+ and an open race for women, were about halfway through the race when the collision occurred.

“We don’t clock their speeds, but what we do know, is that, at the portion of the course where they were had a decline, so it would’ve increased their speed a little bit and that added to the incident,” explained Edwards.

All the road race cycling events were cancelled for the duration of Wednesday but it will not impact cycling events going forward.
