Manitoba police watchdog investigating injury caused in attempted arrest

Manitoba’s police watchdog is investigating the use of a less lethal firearm used by Winnipeg police officers, which caused injuries.

The Independent Investigation Unit (IIU) says the police incident happened on July 11, just before midnight.

According to a report from the WPS, officers responded to a 911 call at a gas station along Portage Avenue, claiming a man with a weapon behaving erratically.

When officers arrived, they found the man running through traffic, and ordered him to stop.

Police say the man refused to drop his weapon, at which point an officer used a less lethal firearm on the man. He was taken into custody and treated for minor injuries.

Due to the nature of the incident, the WPS notified the IIU.

Anyone with any information regarding the incident is asked to contact investigators at 1-844-667-6060.
