Winnipeg police arrest Peter Nygard in alleged 1993 sex assault

Disgraced Canadian fashion mogul Peter Nygard has been arrested by Winnipeg police in connection with a historic sex assault from 1993.

The Winnipeg Police Service says it arrested Nygard Wednesday at the detention centre in Toronto, where he remains in custody.

The former fashion entrepreneur was first charged in Toronto in 2021 with multiple counts of sexual assault and forcible confinement, and is scheduled to face trial in September.

Winnipeg police say the 81-year-old is now being charged with sexual assault and unlawful confinement following an independent review by Saskatchewan Justice.

The WPS says on June 18, 2020, its sex crimes unit began investigating the alleged sex assault of a then 20-year-old, which is said to have taken place on Nov. 18, 1993, at the Nygard Corporate headquarters in Winnipeg.

Police say the matter was forwarded to Saskatchewan Justice in December 2022 for review “at the direction of the Manitoba justice minister.”

Nygard was first arrested in Winnipeg in 2020 under the Extradition Act after he was charged with nine counts in New York, including sex trafficking and racketeering charges. U.S. authorities allege he used his position in the fashion industry to lure women and girls.

In addition to the Toronto charges, a complainant in Montreal came forward with allegations that led to Nygard being charged with one count of sexual assault and one count of forcible confinement. The trial in Quebec is expected to take place next year.
