3 hospitalized as Winnipeg fire crews battle 7 blazes within 36 hours

Three people were hospitalized in stable condition in separate fires Saturday night into Sunday morning, part of a busy stretch that saw Winnipeg firefighters battle seven blazes in a day-and-a-half.
Niakwa Road East
A person was taken to hospital in stable condition after a fire at the Super 8 Motel on Niakwa Road East Saturday around 6:30 p.m.
All occupants self-evacuated from the building before crews arrived.
Pembina Highway
Shortly before 8 p.m., an automatic alarm went off at the Holiday Inn South on Pembina Highway.
Crews arrived to find smoke in the building. The fire was extinguished. No injuries were reported.
Pacific Avenue
One person was transported to hospital in stable condition after a fire in a duplex on Pacific Avenue around 1:40 a.m. Sunday.
Two people were assessed by paramedics on the scene.
Firefighters declared the blaze under control shortly before 2:30 a.m.
Baylor Avenue
A person was hospitalized in stable condition after a fire in a two-storey side-by-side on Baylor Avenue around 3:45 a.m.
Fire crews arrived to find smoke coming from the home. The fire was declared under control at 4:37 a.m.
Firefighters found a dog and two cats inside the house. The City of Winnipeg’s animal services agency responded to assist the pets.
3 vacant house fires
Those four blazes followed three fires in vacant buildings between Friday afternoon and Saturday morning.
At 3:21 p.m. Friday, crews were called to a vacant two-and-a-half storey house on Flora Avenue.
At 11:10 p.m., fire crews responded to a blaze in a vacant two-storey house on Elgin Avenue that had previously been damaged by fire – as recently as May 17.
Finally a vacant home on Lisgar Avenue was expected to be a total loss after a blaze around 9:30 a.m. Saturday. A neighbouring resident self-evacuated from their home and required temporary housing.
The causes of all seven fires are under investigation.
