How do we stop the rise of romance fraud in Canada?

In today’s Big Story Podcast, romance fraud is on the rise with more and more losses being reported each year. In Canada, these cases are difficult to pursue, often leaving perpetrators free to go with a slap on the wrist and victims shocked and traumatized.

Emilia King and Maggie Reid are the creators of the podcast, Catch Him if You Can at pink moon studio. In the new season of their show, they look into one case of Romance fraud.

“Romance fraud more specifically is really difficult to pursue because there’s a lot of difficulty in proving intent … And I think because of this difficulty, a lot of prosecutors just kind of walk away from these cases,” said Reid.

So, what can the authorities do about it? How do we change our system to stop fraudsters? And how can we rewrite the narrative to better support victims?
