Red River to peak between April 28 and May 4 in Winnipeg

By News Staff

Manitoba’s Red River is expected to peak in the coming week.

That’s according to the Manitoba Transportation and Infrastructure’s Hydrologic Forecast Centre.

The river south of the Red River Floodway inlet will crest between April 28 and May 2. It’s expected to peak between April 28 and May 4 in Winnipeg.

The centre says flows and levels are rising or remain high in major rivers as water from Saskatchewan and the United States arrives in Manitoba.

It says up to 15 millimetres of precipitation is forecast for central and western Manitoba starting Wednesday and ending Thursday.

“The Interlake and Parkland regions, the Upper Assiniboine River basin, including areas in Saskatchewan and the Saskatchewan River basin are expected to be affected by the system,” according to Manitoba’s latest flood update, released Monday.

It also warns there is still up to 20 centimetres of snow remaining in some areas, and above-freezing temperatures forecast for the coming days could create a fast melt.
