Group crossing U.S. border from Manitoba called 911 suffering from cold

By The Canadian Press

A sheriff in Minnesota says nine people have been detained after crossing the Canada-U. S. border, and one person is still missing

Steve Gust, the sheriff of Roseau County, says the group was trying to illegally cross the border in woods near Sprague in southeast Manitoba, away from an official port of entry.

He says members of the group called 911 early Tuesday morning because they were suffering in the cold, and some have been detained while some were set to hospital to be treated for hypothermia.

Manitoba RCMP say they have people at the scene, including a search-and-rescue team looking for the reported missing person.

Last year, a family of four from India froze to death while trying to walk across the border near Emerson, Man.

Steve Shand, a Florida resident, was charged with human smuggling.
