Canada’s next election will be a battle of the disliked vs. the hated

By Analysis by The Big Story Podcast

In today’s Big Story podcast, as Justin Trudeau heads towards a decade in power, there’s a big chunk of Canadians who do more than just disapprove of him; they loathe the man. Meanwhile, Trudeau’s top challenger, Pierre Poilievre, hasn’t led the Conservative party very long, but he himself has managed to rack up some impressive unfavourability numbers in that short amount of time.

David Coletto is the CEO of Abacus Data, he joins The Big Story to discuss what polls are saying about Trudeau, Poilievre and their respective likability, and how those numbers may impact the next federal election.

“These are going to be two people who aren’t well liked,” he said, “they basically have to make the other person so unappealing to enough people, that’s the only way that either of them are going to likely win.”

So who tends to dislike Poilievre, who really hates Trudeau, and why? And what do those numbers tell us about the political makeup of Canada in 2023?
