Winnipeg police say a former teacher is facing multiple charges in connection with the alleged sexual assault and luring of a teenage student at Acadia Junior High last year.

The Winnipeg Police Service says it received a report regarding the alleged incident last October.

The teenager told police a teacher at Acadia “forged an inappropriate relationship with her” over the course of seven months between 2021 and 2022.

Police also allege there was “sexual communication” on social media.

The WPS’ child abuse unit says on one occasion, while at school, the accused attempted to kiss the victim but she managed to run away.

Police say the teenager was not physically injured.

The police investigation led officers to arrest 32-year-old Jan Marcopined Laya of Winnipeg on Saturday.

He faces multiple charges:

  • Sexual assault
  • Sexual interference
  • Invitation to sexual touching
  • Luring a person under 14 years of age by means of telecommunication
  • Luring a person under 16 years of age by means of telecommunication
  • Transmitting, making available, distributing or selling sexually explicit material to a person under 16 years of age.

The accused was released on a release order with conditions prohibiting contact and communication with children under the age of 18.
