City exploring redesign of Millennium Library lobby after fatal stabbing

By News Staff

Winnipeg’s Millennium Library resumed some services Friday, nearly two full weeks after the building was fully shut down following a homicide.

Four teenagers were charged and arrested in connection with the Dec. 11 fatal stabbing. A 14-year-old boy was charged with second-degree murder. Three other teens are facing manslaughter charges.

Investigators believe a verbal dispute preceded the alleged stabbing.

The victim was identified as 28-year-old Tyree Cayer.

On Friday, the library began its phased reopening – for holds pickup and return services only. Library users are still not permitted to enter the branch.

The City of Winnipeg says it is commencing a risk assessment and safety audit of the library.

Officials are exploring a permanent redesign of the lobby that supports a controlled environment, without the use of what they call “hostile architecture.”
