What will be the lasting legacy of the Emergencies Act Inquiry?

There has been no shortage of political mudslinging regarding Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s testimony at the Emergencies Act Inquiry last week—but perhaps the most important thing was that he took the stand at all. Beyond the Prime Minister answering questions, Canadians also got looks at emails, text messages, phone calls and all sorts of communications between governments and police services, different levels of leadership, different departments and more.
David Moscrop, is an author, a podcaster and a political writer and commentator. He joins us to share his thoughts on the Emergencies Act Inquiry thus far, and what this unprecedented glimpse into the daily lives of Canada’s top brass reveals about the inner workings of government.
“It does suggest to people that government isn’t run by a committee of angels, it’s not run by philosopher kings, it’s run by people who are just trying to get through the day, like the rest of us,” he said.
So why is it that we only see this level of transparency in the wake of a crisis? Why has government opacity become the norm in Canada?
